#1794 I just started using a new iMac. The computer came with Mac OS Catalina and has since been upgraded to Mac OS 11 Big Sur. I was wondering if anyone has had any luck in getting D-Rats to run on a Mac. When I download the Mac specific file from the Files along with the supporting package, I have been unable to get it to work. The machine says it is unable to run the program because it is either corrupt or incomplete. I cannot get the Linux version to compile on the system either. The machine will run DV-Tools, so I can use a DV-dongle with the machine under Mac OS and am able to run D-Rats on it in a Windows 10 virtual machine under Parallels but DV-Tools won't display properly under that software. I was hoping the machine could be used as an upgrade to my old Windows laptop which is slowing down and glitching more and more by the day, but so far no luck. |
#1795 Glen: toggle quoted messageShow quoted textIt has been a couple of months since installing, and subsequently, de-installing dRats on my Mac Mini running Catalina. Like you, I installed the application plus support package - python. What was odd, was clicking on Python in the Applications folder instead of drats in order to launch drats. In addition to installing dRats on MacOS, I installed dRats on Windows 7 running on the Mac Mini (dual-boot). I still run the Windows version of dRats. My installation of dRats (and Python) went fairly easily - no fuss, no muss. My Mac Mini has an i7 processor, most of the new iMacs have either an i3, i5, i7 or at the high-end, an i9 processor. Drats seems to need a high-horse power processor. The Mac Mini i7 loads dRats (with Python) very fast - almost instantly. However, the Core Duo processor in my 2009 MacBook Pro takes 15 seconds. This comparison is for the Windows version of dRats on both computers. After running dRats (on Windows 7) for several months, I have not found another Mac user running dRats. Hopefully soon, someone will assemble a new dRats version for Mac, including running on the new Mac M1 processor. #1797 Well, the good news is that I finally got the improper display issue resolved when trying to run the DV-Dongle inside the Windows 10 virtual machine on the Mac. So at least now I can run both D-Rats and the dongle at the same time if I wanted to. I have a bunch of other software for my station that only runs on Windows, including my Packet and Winlink stuff. Fldigi will run on either platform, but you still need a way to feed it to the radio, so I will need to play with that. In the meantime, I have the Mac in another room and am leaving the laptop at the shack. Now my biggest problem is my one-year-old granddaughter thinks the Mac is her’s to watch cartoon videos with and she is coming in and demanding that I turn on YouTube to run all her favorite stuff. It is making it hard to get much of anything done. She is heartbroken when I have to shoo her out and turn the machine off to go do something else more important. Cordially, Glen P. Strecker |
#1812 DRats runs on a very low end processor. Rasperry Pi works fine. Im guessing this is a combination Mac OS and parallels issue. My main desktop is a quad core itelnfrom 2009.DRats and nearly all other windows 10 stuff runs fine.takes some time im stsrting up the pc as tge hd and ram is sloe by current standards, but once running i use all ham software just fune and at goid speed. #1814 Eons ago I did some Mac testing for d-rats - but i’m not much of a coder, and have never learned python beyond reading the code a bit - I can usually test and report back things though. I am hoping to have some time in the next few months to see what I can do with everyone else’s work getting it ported to python 3, and even trying to make it run on an M1. toggle quoted messageShow quoted textI’m swamped right now with other things, but I’ll try and get my xcode install updated by the end of the month, and see what my time looks like then. I’ve got a 3 year old Mac Book Pro running Mojave, and a mac mini M1 running Big Sur at the moment for testing, once I get things going. Mac users would love a native d-rats, multi-platform support was one of the great things about the original IMO. 73, -debbie, N9DN On Jan 12, 2021, at 7:49, Gary & Val FICKES <[email protected]> wrote: |
#1815 Debbie, N9DN: toggle quoted messageShow quoted textThank you for your previous work on D-RATS for Mac. And, I’m looking forward to a new native Mac D-RATS implementation. I am happy to assist in beta testing the new Mac D-RATS program when it’s ready. I anticipate having a Mac Mini with M1 processor in a few months sooner when practical. Good luck and happy programming!
